Lessons From 2013 2013, What Happened? Nothing happened LoL! Well......something happened. Well first of all, I am sorry for not updating the site last year, I have a good excuse I think ....., Anyway back to what happened. I know most of you probably thought the project was dead due to my lack of updating the site, but Let me explain 2013 Honestly, I was busy with work.... you know... work, work .....,Your usual 9 To 5 type thing, well in my case 8am to 4pm. All my hours were either spent at the office or doing odd jobs here and there, basically anything to put money in my pockets, it was a hard and honestly I'm not looking to repeat that again. I was burnt out and as a result I was not very productive. That was a good excuse.... you think? ...LoL! Currently I am not financially stable so I sacrifice my animation work and find myself doing all sorts work due to monetary demands. I am unable to collaborate with colleagues and friends on promising projects all these opportunities are passing me by and its eating away at my creativity. I hate the fact that I was unable to take part on a local animation production and blender’s current feature film project just to name a few. That said, for some time now I have been playing around with ideas of making my animation work, work for me and not the other way round. I want to create animation that pays back the countless hours I spend in front of the PC. So late 2013, I decided to start focusing all my efforts on one thing, and that is, to come up with a project that will generate income enough to allow me to work as a full time animator without having to worry about bills and such. If I have my own source of income it will allow me to collaborate with others. The Idea I kept coming back to, was to create an animation series good enough to be sold to at least 10 broadcasters. I then did tons of research and I have come to the obvious conclusion, and that is television is the largest medium of animation, I mean seriously, think about all the cartoons you have seen since you were 6 years old. So I have been wrecking my brain on how to produce an animation series, especially given the fact that I am an independent aspiring film maker, with no income or elaborate equipment. I then decided to employ Guerrilla tactics, first I came up with a workflow that allows me to complete a production in a reasonable amount of time. Simply put LIMITED ANIMATION. You do three things One Plan, Plan, Plan I can’t stress this enough, Plan as much as you can, coz you cannot do what you do not know. Think about this for a moment, you cannot build a house without a Blueprint, that’s why architects draw Blueprints before people construct buildings. Second, Spend an amount of time creating an actual set for your scenes, that set will go a long way to save you time when you start breaking your animation into shots. Lastly, create an array of common everyday actions for your characters, this refers to more than just walk cycles and run cycles, the idea is to push the bar and a create actions like smiling, crying, takes, surprise, in other words create a library of actions that you can combine to tell countless stories. The amount of time you spend now creating this content will save you headaches later on in future, the only thing you will be doing is copying and pasting actions and setting up shots and pressing the render button, and Eureka!... you have a 15 minute episode. Using that same ideology I did the following animation test. The video below is just a demo, a semi completed version of an animation pilot that I intend to present to investors or producers that might offer me a loan. Thus Wild Tales Forgive the choppy animation it’s not my best work I will improve on it! Stats 7 months from Concept to Completion 2 months to create characters 2 months basic animation Marvel and Disney released the first full trailer for Iron Man 3, the latest in the super hero franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. as industrialist Tony Stark.
